SM San Pablo: Rumor or Fact?

I have been hearing about SM building a Shopping Mall right here in San Pablo City for years and yet not one structure with the SM name on it has ever been built anywhere in the City. Before, it was rumored that an SM Mall will be built in the current location of Banahaw Compound but that never happened.

WikiPilipinas even has a page about it but we know their information is incorrect because according to them, “SM Supercenter San Pablo is one of the newest SM City Malls and is set to open before Mid-2008 . It is located at Rizal Avenue, San Pablo City, Laguna.

By doing a little Googling, I learned that they (SM) do have plans on building a Shopping Mall here in San Pablo City. According to SMDevelopment.com, “SM San Pablo (Laguna), on the other hand, is in the planning stages and due for completion in 2008.

    That was a year ago.

ManilaTimes.net in an online article said, “Lim said construction for SM San Pablo may start late this year or may be pushed back to early 2009. The facility may be operational by late next year to 2010.” If we follow this news or story then construction should have been on-going but the question is where?

How to write a Killer Resume

The latest rumor that I’ve collected about SM San Pablo is that construction will start maybe next year (2010) and it will be constructed at Barangay San Rafael near Riverina and Honda San Pablo. Please note that this info is not yet conclusive. It is just what people around me are saying about the construction of SM San Pablo.

Having a major shopping mall like SM in San Pablo City is very significant because it will not only produce those much needed jobs but it will also increase tourism for the city. People from neighboring towns like Calauan, Tiaong, Sto. Tomas, Rizal, Nagcarlan and others will be flocking into the city. Also, it will give me and my family a new place to visit in the city.

I was at SM Lucena last week and I noticed medyo konti ang tao and maraming stalls ang vacant or nakasara.

I think the rumor that the SM branch there is not doing so well! Malaki ang floor space nila and my 3 levels pa.

Even you sa Food Court nila, yung ibang food stalls, sarado!

I know di mangyayari yung ganun sa SM San Pablo kasi mahilig tayo kumain at mahilig mag-mall.

We are also near other towns na maraming rich landowners like Alaminos, Tiaong, Rizal, etc.

Not to mention na napakaraming tao dito sa San Pablo. If you go to SM City lipa, dami mong makakasalubong na kakilala na mga taga San Pablo.

Even when we go shopping sa Alabang, yun mga taga San Pablo din nakikita ko.

Anyway, politics killed the progress in San Pablo City. The potential is there, the people are educated, the young generation vibrant.

Sana lang mawala na ang mga old and lazy pols and mapalitan ng outward at forward looking na new generation.

Wala akong ini-endorse.

Magtayo ng new hotels or accommodation for toursits at please make it affordable for domestic tourists! Mga friends ko from other cities and Manila bakit daw walang mapag-stayan sa San Pablo na mura at desente?

Hindi maganda for tourist ang San Pablo! Sayang ang mga lakes dito!

And napakalapit natin sa Manila, bakit di natin madevelop ang area natin for industrial parks?

Don’t ever say na pang eco-toursim kasi tayo kaya sa Calamba at Sta. Rosa napunta ang industrial parks! If so, bakit pati eco-tourism industry sa atin e wala?

Please politicians, answer this! Sayang talaga ang San Pablo! Napaka-backward!

About sa missing comments, I removed those comments that were off-topic, offensive and vulgar.

yup, lugi ang sm lucena, not crowded like sm batangas din.. But not SM Lipa, na umaariba bec. of its central location, being surrounded by many towns na maraming middle class at myayaman, and the big population of lipa itself. To think na may kalaban pa na robinsons and other malls. Same thing would have happened to san pablo, na central din ang location.

    • paul jake

size does matter.. the latest press release by SM discloses that SM San Pablo will be one of the smallest, if not the smallest SM mall in the country. So far the smallest now is SM Center Las Pinas at 32,000 sq.ms. only.

      • JOHN

Correct lang kita Paul Jake. SM Center Las Pinas is the second smallest mall. Mas maliit ang SM Supercenter Pasig na may 29,017

Pero I think SM San Pablo will be around 60,000

Ok na yun basta may sinehan

    • JOHN

Yung iba nalilito. Mas maliit daw SM Quiapo. SM Quaipo is not included in the 36malls of SM as of Nov 2009. Di rin Kasama ang SM Makati and SM Cubao.

    • joker

    • aradong

    • joker

hindi naman siguro kababawan yung pinag uusapan regarding sa sm mall na ginagawa siguro excited lang karamihan dahil sa tagal ng panahon ngayon lang natuloy sm and beside marami gusto mag work dyan i think mga 5000 workers o more than pa ang magkakaroon ng work bago mag opening yan yun ang pinakaimportante, and i’m sure kahit sa lucena, lipa o batangas man nung ginagawa pa ang mga sm mall dyan the same din ang pinaguusapan dyan kahit size nung mall dun, natural lang yun kahit saang lugar mag open sm di ba! kahit nga mall of asia at megamall pinag usapan ang size eh, sa lucena nga halos naubos ang tao sa bayan ng mag opening ang sm mall dyan. same w/ lipa and other places na nag open SM.

    • aradong

    • maileen

.. i’ve said my piece na, just to add, i just want to impart and as a wake-up call, na let’s move on, as san pablenos, and focus ourselves to the more community building and progressive ideas and issues.. the mall is there na, being constructed, so why the fuss? c’mon, i’m not degrading fellow pablenos, its clear what i said, its the discussion that’s so petty, get it?

    • keith

admin: meron po uli akong mga latest na photos of SM SP, I’ll send it to your e mail. thank you po!

    • keith

      Hello, everyone.
Your discussions amuse me.It’s ok to talk about the mall, politics, etc.
How about graft and corruption? You see, me and my family would really love to get back to San Pablo ( I was born and raised there till my uni days, then lived overseas for 30 years). Corruption from the lowest level to the top is hurting us and stopping us from returning home. Any comment?

    • karina

      Hi Aivhee,

Sakay ka lang ng jeep to Wawa,Calauan or Bay or Los Banos at siguradong dadaan ‘yon sa Sta.Maria Magdalena. Marami akong kakilala roon. Can I help you with more stuff?

    • Coco Martin

Wow, me away na yata dito Maileen versus the the SM lovers, hehehehe!

Well, natutuwa ako ke Maileen kasi na-pick nya yung suggestion ko sa mga politician to form a San Pablo Investment Board na ibi-build ang San Pablo either for eco-toursim or idustrial parks.

You cannot blame them, it’s not really mababaw kasi jobs, jobs jobs, ang katumbas nyan!

Pero agree ako na we need to talk also other issues na binanggit mo.

      Anyway, let’s do it!

    • keith

Happy Valentine’s day!

    • maileen

.. thanks coco martial 4 appreciating my comment. you know im just suggesting, maybe those in the position can lobby that, i.e. the creation of san pablo investment board, tourism council, (like the ones they have in neighboring lipa city) and other investment-generating drives. Its pretty obvious we are in dire need of those, let me point out that in the income aspect, specially the locally sourced revenues, we are far far behind our neighboring cities and counterparts, whose income are in the range of 800M to 1.3 billion. Are we really a first class city, when our income hardly grows and in fact seems to get stuck at 500M level? that’s total, the locally sourced is below 150M. don’t you know that the relatively new and smaller 3rd class city of tanauan has a locally sourced income of more than 300M. No wonder, in many websites and threads, san pablo is being referred to as a 2nd class city, and in wiki or wape, a semi-developed residential area. People in our city hall should exercise utmost efficiency in raising revenue generation, not just for the numbers, but to be able to have enough funds to deliver basic services to the people.

    • maileen

oh im sorry, its coco martin, not coco martial… just a typo error there. my apology..

    • maileen

.. to keith. i guess there’s nothing much to say about the ongoing SM construction. Much have been said. i apologize, i was mistaken for referring to my fellow pablenos as mabababaw. its really the comments.. anyway, maybe discussions about sm would come out after it has opened. its inevitable, people would get excited, compare it to other sm mall, get disappointed (or satisfied) with the design and the interiors, and the likes….

    • maileen

… may i just invite, for those who are interested? If you want to take your MBA at the best school but don’t have the time because its far, then enroll at Ateneo in Lipa, its near us. The Ateneo Graduate School have come to venues outside makati so that more can have access to their kind of education. They also have one in Sta. Rosa. Good day to all. Im on my 4th subject na.

    • lyon

How about the traffic in San Pablo?

    • Coco Martin

      @Maileen:

Hehehe! Wow, the reason why you seem to have a deep understanding of what you are saying is that you have good educational background. That’s great, keep it up!

Anyway, you nailed it right when you mention the income aspect of San Pablo compared to other cities. That is not really suprising given the fact that our city hasn’t really attracted investors to set up business here. revenues come from companies and all we have here are just retail outlets and some banks.

The entrance of SM might put San Pablo in the map again as people from neighboring areas will flock here. But as it is, it is not enough. As I have been crowing about over and over, an Investment Board composed of competent, forward and outward-looking people can brainstorm on how to attract foreign and local investors. As I said we have all the resources: land, educated people, infrastructure, and other things that escape my memory by now. We are even strategically-located as a hub of Soythern luzon. As far as I can remember, we are part of the Mega Cities. I forgot the term, “Ten Emerging Cities” based on readiness of the infrastructure for Information Technology and the education of the residents. We are ready for call centers, and other BPO companies but look at what our politicians are doing?

I have so many things to say, might share it in the future. For now, I need to sleep na hehehe!

      Gogogo San Pablo people!

    • maileen

.. san pablo is part of metro laguna, which is one of the top 10 next wave cities. We are not yet part of a mega city, or of mega manila, which in various renderings says, for example, ” cabuyao is part of mega manila whose built-up area now extends up to Lipa City in the south.” When san pablo catches up, hopefully in the near future, then the mega manila built up area will also include, officially, san pablo in the southeast.. hey officials, do your thing, hurry up please!

      • Coco Martin

Yup, that’s it! Very well said! And btw, thanks nga pala sa Admin ng site na’to, at least, me hingahan ng mga taga-SP.

Well, sana nababasa to ng mga nakaupo at mga uupo pa. Dami matalino at masipag sa San Pablo, use them!

    • kc cordero

hi! ask ko lang po how much is the ongoing price of per square meter of land, the property is locatedc at palakpakin. salamat po.

    • karina

SM and PureGold should pay for the infrastructure so the traffic will not come to a halt. They should pay for extra lanes, so not the normal traffic is coming to a total stop because somebody want to turn into SM or PureGold carpark. Traffic in San Pable is a disgrace but with some extra lanes, roundabouts, traffic lights, reduce the left turns and adhere to the road rules, the trafic can flow even in peakhour.

    • maileen

… what happened to the much ballyhoed redevelopment of villa escudero? i know its on-going, but what about the planned integration of mixed use complex in the san pablo portion of that ambitious project that’s supposed to include recreational, commercial, lifestyle and transportation hub (similar to that of lucena grand central) and hotel complex. in fact, it was rumored then that SM would be located in that massive development, apparently it was not, SM is looming over at Riverina. What really happened to that project? It could have already put san pablo in the forefront, and could have already made as a fully developed and highly urbanized city. We could have catched up with calamba, lipa, and even sta. rosa…

    • maileen

.. maybe now, we are not a semi-developed residential area, but one of the major recreational, commercial and industrial hubs of southern tagalog..
